“Eat the hologram” [updated]

Engadget claims this is standard-issue “wallpaper” in Windows 7:

We’re supposed to see—feel—some sort of Murakamish yet pastel sense of peace…

…but the central figure in the bear suit clinging to some infantile object makes it hard not to think of one of the most disturbing scenes in Kubrick’s film The Shining:

The other obvious intended reference is Hieronymous Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights, in particular to the left panel, “The Joining of Adam and Eve”:

But it’s hard to ignore that volcano in the background, which can only be a reference to the right panel—hell:

Note to self: track down a box that can extract the “Limbo” folder hierarchy from I/O/D’s Webstalker version 3.
